Somatic Experiencing, Imagery, and Storytelling in the Body
We can hold emotions in our bodies in a very physical way (think lump in your throat, knot in your stomach. . . ) and imagery can help us use our own creativity to find stories about what’s happening and why. Sometimes, those stories offer us a way to address emotions, release them, or change our relationship to them.
Somatic Experiencing popularized the idea of imagery and storytelling in the body, but this stuff has been around for eons. It’s a great example of how creativity is inherent to all humans, and how it helps us heal. . . but only when we trust the process.
Leaning into the absurdity it key. The creativity is in the silliness, the discomfort, and the disbelief. That’s also where the gold is.
Is there a time you’ve trusted the process and were surprised by the outcome?
